This six-month hybrid fellowship equips teachers with practical tools to integrate journalism into everyday teaching, making lessons more engaging, relevant, and impactful. Selected fellows will also receive a monthly project stipend to support the implementation of journalism-based learning activities in their classrooms.

About the Fellowship

The Africa Education Teachers’ Fellowship is a professional development programme designed to empower teachers with innovative teaching approaches that combine journalism and education.

Throughout the six-month fellowship, participants will learn how to use journalism as a classroom tool to improve:

  • Critical thinking skills
  • Reading and literacy
  • Civic participation
  • Climate and environmental awareness
  • Ethical media consumption
  • Student engagement

The programme blends online learning sessions, classroom practice, peer collaboration, mentorship, and action research to create meaningful learning experiences for both teachers and students. 

Fellowship Benefits

Successful applicants will receive:

  • A six-month professional development experience
  • Mentorship from experienced educators and journalists
  • Access to a network of education leaders across Africa
  • Practical classroom implementation support
  • Peer learning and collaborative projects
  • A monthly stipend to support classroom activities
  • Opportunities to continue collaborating within the Pulitzer Center educator community after the fellowship concludes. 

Who Can Apply?

Applicants should:

  • Be an active primary or secondary school teacher
  • Be based in one of the eligible African countries
  • Demonstrate interest in:
    • Journalism
    • Media literacy
    • Literacy education
    • Climate and environmental education
  • Be willing to participate throughout the six-month programme
  • Commit to implementing journalism-based teaching activities in their classrooms. 

Fellowship Structure

Participants will engage in:

  • Virtual learning sessions
  • Classroom project implementation
  • Action research
  • Peer-to-peer learning
  • Mentorship sessions
  • Reflection and knowledge sharing

By the end of the fellowship, teachers will have developed innovative classroom projects that integrate journalism into everyday teaching while contributing to improved student learning outcomes.

  • Nigeria
  • Ghana
  • Uganda
  • Ethiopia
  • Cameroon
  • Democratic Republic of Congo
  • Zambia
  • Burkina Faso
