About the African Plant Nutrition Outreach Fellowship
The fellowship is designed to strengthen knowledge sharing and practical adoption of sustainable nutrient management across African farming systems.
Rather than funding laboratory research alone, the program supports projects that bridge the gap between scientific knowledge and real-world agricultural practice through:

Projects addressing existing knowledge gaps or improving the delivery of soil fertility information to farmers are especially encouraged.
Eligibility Criteria
Applicants must:
- Be employed full-time as a scientist, extension specialist, or educator.
- Work at an African:
- National Agricultural Research and Extension System (NARES) institution,
- university,
- nonprofit organization, or
- private-sector organization.
- Be actively involved in agricultural education, research, or outreach.
- Submit an innovative outreach proposal focused on improving soil fertility management.
- Demonstrate potential for meaningful impact.
- Show evidence of partnerships or collaborative activities (preferred).
Students are not eligible for this fellowship.
APNI also strongly encourages female professionals to apply.
Required Application Documents
Applicants should prepare the following documents before beginning the online application:
- A detailed project proposal explaining:
- the outreach activities,
- expected outcomes,
- innovation,
- implementation strategy,
- potential impact.
- Two signed recommendation letters, including:
- one from the applicant’s supervisor,
- both written on official institutional letterhead.
- An up-to-date CV or résumé highlighting:
- academic qualifications,
- publications,
- outreach activities,
- communication materials related to soil fertility or plant nutrition.
- Applicants must also agree to submit a brief report after the fellowship explaining how the grant was used and the outcomes achieved.
Documents may be submitted in English or French.
