Applications are now open for the Africa Prize for Engineering Innovation 2027, one of Africa’s most prestigious competitions for engineering entrepreneurs and technology innovators. Organized by the Royal Academy of Engineering, the programme supports promising innovators across sub-Saharan Africa who are developing practical engineering solutions to solve local challenges while creating sustainable businesses.
Beyond the prize money, successful applicants gain access to an intensive commercialization programme designed to help transform innovative ideas into scalable businesses. Prize Benefits
Participants selected for the programme will receive:
- Total annual prize funding worth £85,000
- £50,000 awarded to the overall winner

Who Can Apply?
The competition is open to innovators who meet the following requirements:
- Be 18 years or older.
- Be a citizen of a sub-Saharan African country.
- Be currently living in a sub-Saharan African country.
- Be fluent in English.
- Have an engineering-based innovation addressing a real-world challenge.
- The innovation should be in the early stages of commercialization.
- Hardware innovations should have a working prototype and evidence of customer interest.
- Software or digital solutions should have a functional minimum viable product (MVP) with demonstrated user traction.
- Applicants should have a viable business plan showing strong growth potential.
Required Application Documents
Applicants should prepare several supporting materials before submitting their application, including:
- Updated CV
- Technical documentation
- Images of the innovation
- Demonstration video (where applicable)
- Letter of support or endorsement
- Technical diagram or schematic

Application Process
The programme uses a two-stage application process.
Stage One
Applicants submit basic information about themselves, their innovation, and supporting technical documents. Applications are reviewed by engineering experts who assess the technical strength, innovation, and commercial potential of each solution.
Only the highest-scoring applicants proceed to the next stage.
Stage Two
Longlisted applicants are invited to submit a more detailed application covering:
- Business model
- Market analysis
- Commercialization strategy
- Financial projections
- Growth plans
Successful applicants will then be selected to participate in the Academy’s eight-month commercialization programme.
